Elena is aware that the cooling of her marriage is not a temporary state of affairs. Alberto, a young aerospace engineer, appears to have taken the first step towards its breakup. He doesn't want to hurt anybody, but he feels confused and he seems to have lost his sentimental bearings. Although he loves his wife and young son, he knows that his feelings for Diego are not just sexual. Diego is an orthopedic surgeon at a private clinic and he's incapable of leading a double life. When he falls in love it's all or nothing. Elena gets wind of her husband's unfaithfulness by a hotel invoice in his dry-cleaning. She confronts Alberto who confesses that he cheated -- but not with whom. At a beachside medical convention Alberto meets Diego's boss, Eva, who has a soft spot for her employee. Elena, meanwhile, isn't about to give up that easily on Alberto. She assesses the situation coolly, allows herself to dabble in an affair and afterwards puts all her cards on the table. Now it's Alberto who has to make some hard choices. Intense, well-played... SECOND SKIN starts out slow but ends up engaging both heart and mind. -- Jonathan Holland (Variety) |
