VIOLET
Canada
2000 / 35 mm / Color / 105 min.

Fifty five is a lethal year for Violet's family. Her brother and both of her parents died at that same age. Violet feels the hand of fate upon her; she'll be 55 in July. Life seems to be passing her by. The truth is, Violet has been only half alive since her husband died several years ago. And she's blind as a bat to the fact that Rusty, the handsome farm manager, is in love with her. Violet has a tough time maintaining a brave front at her birthday party. Her gay son Carlos, the linguistics professor, has returned without a decent explanation from a good job (at last!) in Montreal. Her eldest, Rex, a musician in constant need of cash, dates a steady stream of new girls. And soon she'll be losing her baby, Ramona, who is marrying her boyfriend in the fall, if he lasts that long. After several ill omens, Violet goes into an existential tailspin and takes to her bed to wait for her seemingly inevitable fate. Her fractured family gather around trying their best to snap her out of her depression. All except cousin Lynda, who is waiting for the curse of 55 to pay off so she can get her hands on the farm. Then Rusty makes a serious move to get Violet's attention...
