LE GRAND NORD
Great North tells the story of native peoples living in harmony with the harsh elements of the Arctic. A celebration of the landscape, the wildlife and the human inhabitants of the region, it is a tribute to the Inuit culture of northern Canada and the Saami culture of northern Sweden. The cameras of Great North span endless expanses of silent tundra, icebergs drifting majestically over Arctic waters, the frantic stamping of caribou and reindeer and the elegant ballet of the aurora borealis. We follow the enormous herds of wild caribou migrating across northern Quebec and Labrador and the semi-domesticated reindeer in northern Sweden. Using Arctic native Adamie Inukpuk as a guide, the film travels through the glacier valleys and fjords of the Canadian north. Adamie reveals the Inuit traditions he learned from his father: igloo-building, gathering mussels under Arctic ice, and living with the caribou which have been at the heart of Inuit culture for millennia. Great North pays homage to film history and one of the world's first theatrical documentaries, Nanook of the North by the legendary American director Robert J. Flaherty. When the incredible footage of Nanook and his family first appeared on movie screens in 1922, audiences around the globe suddenly became aware of a world they scarcely new, that of the people of the North. By a happy coincidence, when co-director Martin J. Dignard met Adamie Inukpuk he learned that he was Nanook's grandson. Great North attempts to carry on Flaherty's tribute to the traditions of the north.
