An old man sits at a table in his room, reading an article. The author of the article, a good-looking, pleasant young man, is standing behind him. The date is August 20, 1940. The place is Coyoacán, a suburb of Mexico City. It is just past 5 o'clock in the afternoon. The young man puts his hand in his raincoat, pulls out an ice pick and plunges it into the old man's skull. A long, deep howl of anger and pain can be heard, the howl of a dying man. It is a cry that will follow the murderer to the end of his days. The murderer's victim is Leon Trotsky, the founder of the Red Army and leader of the Bolshevik Revolution who was forced to flee to Mexico to avoid Stalin's executioners. The murderer says his name is Jacques Mornard, but his real name is Ramón Mercader del Rio. He is Spanish, an agent for the NKVD (precursor of the KGB), a man with a mission. An ardent Communist, Ramón Mercader is convinced that this crime will make him a hero, that by assassinating an "enemy of the Revolution" he will have demonstrated his readiness to "storm the skies". But that's not what happens. He is arrested and thrown into prison. Ramón Mercader begins to endure his own private hell... |
