In the Heian period, Otomo Jiro, son of the feudal Lord of Shinano, gets lost on his way to Kyoto and finds shelter in the hut of Morime, a bewitching woman who gives Jiro a flute made by the famous craftsman, Kijin. In Kyoto Jiro stays at the mansion of nobleman Chunagon Sanjo and his mistress Kitanokata where he meets the beautiful young princess Hagihime. For Jiro it's love at first sight. Unfortunately, Hagihime's heart already belongs to Yasumaro, a notorious libertine. Jiro courts her with every means available, including playing his magical flute, but Hagihime can only think of Yasumoro, who is bedridden after having been badly wounded by bandits. When Hagihime decides to visit a hermitage where she and Yasumoro once spent a night together, she is assaulted by Fudomaru, leader of the same group of bandits who had attacked Yasumaro. Hearing her cries, it is Jiro who comes to her rescue. When Yasumoro displays indifference to her plight, Jiro makes one last attempt to win her love for himself.
