Kini and Adams are best friends with a dream. Though penniless farmers, they hope to get a wrecked car running again and use it to move to the city. There, they believe, life will be easier. The reality is that Kini is married to stern Aida and is the father of a little girl. He's not going anywhere. But the men's lives do change when a nearby stone quarry is reopened. Now they have jobs and can afford to repair the old car. Unfortunately, while Kini is promoted to an important job, Adams remains mired as a labourer. Their friendship will be sorely tested. "Shooting in impressive widescreen, cinematographer Jean-Paul Meurisse creates a world of immense natural spaces, verdant rolling hills interrupted by isolated shanties and a powdery white quarry dotted with colourful workers. His work allows Ouedraogo's strong feeling for visuals to shine through in every scene." -- Deborah Young (Variety)
