Saul and Rami, both 40, are best friends. Each is married and slightly unhappy. They indulge themselves with fantasies and regrets. Rami is surprised by the agony and dimension of his mid-life crisis. He escapes from it into the arms of his latest lover, a Russian immigrant who is at once romantic and a bit hesitant. Saul has a curious envy for the emotional turmoil that Rami is enduring and feeds on it even as he sympathizes with his friend. One night Saul comes home to find his own wife on the couch with a private detective who had been staked out on their roof to watch a neighbour. The situation degenerates into a nightmarish farce that compels Saul to leave home. Saul arrives at Rami's house in Jerusalem and finds Rami's wife alone and in tears. Dramatic changes are in store for the two couples as they make desperate attempts to rescue their shattered marriages. |
