Edouard Vuibert, Eddie, is a man without a job, without a family, with a place to stay. He's at the end of his rope. One day, after a fight with two players of three-card monte, Eddie's life changes. For the better. A rich local businessman, Victor Benzakem, intervenes, chases off the aggressors and, taking him for a Jew, decides to hire him for his dry goods warehouse. Eddie decides this isn't the time to correct the misunderstanding over his ethnic origins. Initiated by Dov, a young salesman who also works for Victor, Eddie finds himself member of a colourful group of friends -- Serge Benamou, Rafy Stylmod, Yvan and, especially, Sandra, the boss' daughter with whom Eddie instantly falls in love. To raise his esteem in her eyes, Eddie decides to reform, to get ahead in the world. But life in the neighbourhood is strewn with pitfalls and success will be harder than he expects. Eddie finally succeeds in winning Sandra over but while plans for a wedding are being made, he lets the cat out of the bag: he's not Jewish. What a scandal... "Funny, well-observed and excellently cast." -- Pariscope
