A Catholic school in Paris between the world wars. Friendship between students of different sections is forbidden. It is no secret that the Abbot of Pradts takes a special interest in Souplier, an eighth-grade "problem student" who has faced expulsion on two occasions. The abbot is bothered by the influence of another student, Servais, on Souplier. Servais is an excellent student whose loyalty and generosity are universally admired. The abbot allows Servais to see Souplier but makes him promise that their relationship will remain irreproachable.
