Dir.: Chris Marker Born in Neuilly-sur-Seine, France in 1921, Chris Marker wrote poems, a novel, many essays and magazine articles before turning to films in the '50s. A inveterate traveller, he has filmed around the world and the resulting footage has been fashioned into works that are closer to socio-political essays than conventional documentaries. His filmography includes: LETTER FROM SIBERIA (1958), "Description d'un combat" (1960), CUBA SI (1961), La Jetée (1962), LE JOLI MAI (1962), THE KOUMIKO MYSTERY (1965), SI J'AVAIS QUATRE DROMADAIRES (1966), "Le Deuxième procès d'Arthur London" (1969), LA SOLITUDE DU CHANTEUR DE FOND (1975), LE FOND DE L'AIR EST ROUGE (1977), SANS SOLEIL (1982) and LE TOMBEAU D'ALEXANDRE (1993). |

Laura has inherited a video game which her dead lover wants her to continue writing. In the game he has reconstructed and programmed with painstaking detail the Second World War battle of Okinawa, including troop movements, kamikaze pilots and mass suicides. Yet all her attempts to change the course of the battle end with the messages: "Error 14 has occurred" or "Request denied". Amused but still frustrated, she complains out loud to her dead lover about the game's malfunctioning. Finally, she calls upon the assistance of "ace editor" Chris, who has made several films about Japan. He takes up the challenge. They both begin researching the subject of Okinawa and the film shifts constantly between their parallel worlds. On the one hand there is Chris, who seems to work during the day and can only be heard on voice-over. He examines the suitability of film and television images for the chronicling of war. Laura, on the other hand, surfs the net by night, where she makes contact with people who experienced the war first hand. One of these witnesses is Shigeaki Kinjo, whose task as a boy was to kill his mother and younger brother in order to prevent them from falling into the hands of the Americans. Later she begins to understand what Chris means when he insists that the game will never be able to rewrite history. |
