CHARLES AZNAVOUR EN ARMÉNIE (TV) Dir.: Mireille Dumas; Phot.: Bruno Sevaistre; Ed.: Françoise Tubaut; Mus.: Dominique Kerboeuf; Prod. & Sales: Mireille Dumas, MD Productions, 12-14 rue de l'Église, 75015 Paris (France), tél.: (01) 43 92 20 00, fax: (01) 43 92 20 01. Charles Aznavour hadn't sung in Armenia in 30 years but he decided to return to the land of his ancestors to give two concerts there for independence day celebrations. In this documentary about Aznavour's visit we are offered a twin portrait of the artist and the country. We meet an Aznavour we haven't seen before. Intercut with his own songs and Armenian songs, we are offered a behind-the-scenes look at his concerts and visits to orphanages supported by his humanitarian aid society. Aznavour talks of his past as the son and grandson of Armenians who didn't speak a word of French and of his desire to be loved more than to be a star. Aznavour has returned to Armenia still bearing the scars of the massacres of 1915 and the earthquake of 1988, with a "commitment to memory", undertaken, he says, "out of duty..." |
