Tarred and feathered, beaten and left at death's door, Chance still hasn't given up hope of finding his way across the desert to recoup the losses he suffered in a near-fatal card game. Scout for a local military platoon that he mistakenly led the wrong way in battle, Chance is disoriented and barely conscious when he's spotted by buck. Automatically Buck believes Chance to be Icarus, the Greek god who travelled too close to the sun while costumed in wings made of wax and feathers, and was sent careening back to earth. A believer, Buck vows to nurse Chance back to health so that Icarus can complete his mission: to travel where no man has dared go before. Chance's agenda isn't quite so grandiose. The silver-tongued adventurer only wants to rights a few wrongs and possibly reclaim the heart of a lost love. He's just waiting to be fit enough to resume his journey. To facilitate his recuperation, Buck brings Chance to the religious mission where he lives, a mission headed by the fire and brimstone spewing Sister Drexel. Once Drexel learns of Chance's scouting skills, Chance's mission is changed once again. Drexel insists that he'll be the one to lead her and her emotionally challenged charges across the desert to the promised land of the Northern Mission. But Chance wants his say in the matter...
