Dir.: Bakyt Karagulov

Born in Frunze (now Bishkek), Kirghizia in 1950, Bakyt Karagulov studied philosophy at the Kirghiz State University and cinema at VGIK, the celebrated Moscow film school. He has worked as an actor and filmmaker since the early '80s. Karagulov's filmography includes: IN THE SADDLE (1984), THE WITCH OF THE MOON (1985), THE FIRST GENERAL (1986), GRANDSON WENT TO TOWN (1987), THE TEARS OF THE MIGRATORY BIRD (1991) and SNOWSTORMY STATION (1995), shown at last year's Montreal World Film Festival.

In this adaptation of "Mother's Field" by noted Kirghiz writer, Chingyz Aitmatov, Tolgonai loses her husband, her three sons and her daughter-in-law in war. But she doesn't lose her hope. She is determined that her family and her people will survive. With her grandson she ensures that the line will continue. Her story is the story of a mother and of a motherland; it is the story of the 20th century.
