I AM TIRED OF STANDING, I LIE DOWN (CA) Dir.: Jean Rouch; Phot.: Jean Rouch; Ed.: Françoise Beloux; Mus.: Hamidou Godyé; Prod. & Sales: Jean Rouch, Comité du film ethnographique, Musée de l'homme, Place du Trocadéro, 75116 Paris (France), tél.: 47 04 38 20, fax: 45 53 52 82 / Centre culturel franco-nigérien (Niamey, Niger) / Irsh (Niamey). "If one dreams under a 'Gaoberi', an acacia albida tree felled by lightning but still alive, then dreams will become reality and, as Boubou Hama says, 'yesterday's doppelgänger will meet tomorrow's doppelgänger'. And in this country, 'Nowhere', a land that's upside down, this is the daily rule of the game for men who have been friends forever, Damouré Zika, Lam Ibrahim Dia, Tallou Mouzourane and Jean Rouch. With the help of the god of thunder, Dongo, the spirit of water, Harakoy Dikko, and their accomplice Gaoberi, the talking tree, 'I'm tired of standing, I lie down', everything is possible. Time and space no longer exist, only the dream dictates the rule of the game. It is a cruel game of catastrophes, of drought, of flooding, of ghosts, of 'whoever loses wins'. And the author of this adventure, the lying tree, rises again. The tale changes title, just like the film: 'We're tired of lying down, we get up'." -- Jean Rouch |
