This documentary is inspired by the autobiographical writings of French writer and feminist Hélène Cixous. Born in Algeria in 1937 to Jewish parents of German and Algerian origin, Cixous emigrated to France at the age of 18. Since then she has authored over forty works of fiction, plays and essays of literary and feminist criticism. In 1969 she won the Prix Médicis for her first novel, "Dedans". This film combines archival footage with dramatized sequences illustrating Cixous' childhood. And it is via the author's reminiscences that the film describes certain key events in postwar European history. From the time of her ancestors' exile from Spain centuries earlier until the Second World War and life under a colonial regime in Algeria, Cixous tells a story that is representative of the experiences of thousands of Jewish families in the 20th century. Intercut with these autobiographical sequences are interviews with other writers and artists -- Jacques Derrida, Anne Hébert, Marie-Claire Blais, Ariane Mnouchkine, Daniel Mesguich, Anne-Marie Alonzo, Monique Bosco -- discussing the work and influence of Cixous. |
