When Marie visits her mother Anna Loeser in the sanatorium where she is being treated for depression, Anna has the feeling that she will never see her daughter again. A few days later, Marie's body is found in a small lake in an isolated area in the woods near Schwerin. Robert Kunze, a businessman who made a lot of money after the reunification of Germany, had strangled her during a rape attempt. The police begin their investigation. Former inspector Kurt Wolf helps Norbert Michaelis, the new inspector who has been put in charge of the case. Former competitors, the two policemen now team up to find Marie's murderer. Anna wants her say in the matter, too. She wants revenge. When the murderer is apprehended but released for lack of evidence, she decides to take the law into her own hands. She gets a gun and tracks down the man who killed her daughter. But Anna soon learns that revenge proves easier to want than to accomplish.
