A most unlikely police officer -- timid, insecure, a man who normally shies away from any hint of violence -- is appointed chief of the police force in Palle, a small town in the north of Peru which was the site, many centuries earlier, of the Moche culture, at once the bloodiest and most beautiful civilization in pre-Inca times.
