New York City cops haul an angry black transvestite out of a Manhattan apartment building. When he breaks free, the police knock him to the ground and cart him away, leaving behind a large pool of blood. Witnessed by five different bystanders, the incident becomes lodged in the memory of each. Malcolm, the doorman of the Upper West Side building where the arrest takes place -- and who happens to be black himself -- is disturbed that a brother is promoting what he believes is a negative image. Tom, a white handyman and closeted gay, is likewise troubled by the brazen bisexuality of the drag queen. And John, a showy gay activist is forced to re-examine his commitment to certain ideas. There is also Geena, an embittered and lonely businesswoman who keeps Tom around for company, and Sadie, an older woman whose life is spent caring for an ailing relative. Each of the five is witness to the same incident but each sees it very differently and finds personal prejudices reflected right back in the process. "Sensitive, funny and unusually empathetic in understanding how the same event could strike such different responses, NEPTUNE'S ROCKING HORSE is an involving psychological study of the urban mosaic." -- Carrie Rickey (Philadelphia Inquirer)
