Christina, sexy and spirited, and Athanasia, poetic and sentimental, are friends who are about to finish high school in a small town in rural Greece. Brought up on romantic notions of love and marriage as well as the traditional taboos regarding sex, the girls are caught between what they want for themselves and what their parents have planned. Christina's bigwig father wants her to marry Vangelis, a serious, slightly seedy character who manages a bar and operates the local slaughterhouse. Athanasia wants to quit school to run away with Murphy, who works in the bar and wants to be a professional musician. Her father, a veterinarian, just wants Athanasia to be happy but her mother thinks she ought to go after Vangelis as well. After secretly watching Athanasia's father artificially inseminate a cow, the girls decide to pursue their own goals with vigour. But human sexuality turns out to be a lot less controlled and predictable than the bovine variety. The girls are forced to revise their plans... "An insightful look into contemporary Greek country life... this colourful, intriguing and down-to-earth feature benefits from the enviable talent at the helm. All in all, an auspicious debut." -- Athens News "Great sense of humour, Almodóvar-like deliberately kitsch, witty dialogue, original characters. A different, independent Greek movie." -- Orestes Andreadakis (Avgi) |
