The heroine of the drama, Diana, the young, attractive Countess of Belflor, is a complex woman, at once discerning and impulsive, intelligent and ambitious. She breaks with the female archetype of period literature, that of the submissive victim. She confronts and overcomes her womanly fate, though she does it by means of deceit. She chooses noble sentiment as opposed to noble blood but she is subject to the patriarchal order and in agreeing to secret deceptions she degrades her sense of honour in her attempt to save it. Diana falls in love with her attendant Teodoro, who is engaged to the countess' maidservant Marcela. When she discovers the relationship between the two, Diana is overcome by jealousy and she punishes them by separating them. Even though her expression of it is intermittent and constantly changing, Teodoro recognizes that he is indeed the object of Diana's desire, and he adjusts his ambitions accordingly... "She's neither in nor out, won't eat or let eat; she's like the 'dog in the manger'." |
