Dir.: Petar Lalovi

Born in Subotica, Yugoslavia in 1952, Petar Lalovi studied at the Theatre and Film Academy in Zagreb and the School of Dramatic Arts in Belgrade. First as cinematographer and then as writer and director, Lalovi has made over 200 documentaries (most on themes of nature and ecology), four features and two television series. His directorial filmography includes: THE LAST OASIS, THE VANISHING WORLD, "The Taste of Honey", "Ants" (all nominated for Oscars) and "Three Bear Cubs" (1996). SOME BIRDS CAN'T FLY marks his debut in fiction features.

A ten-year-old girl who lives in a smog-polluted city, has contracted leukemia. The doctors have given her one more year to live, however the girl's grandfather, who used to work as a gamekeeper, has other ideas. He takes her to live with him in his house in the forest. Now she is getting to know firsthand the animals she had previously only seen in movies. Over a period of several months, the old man tries to cure his grandchild with tea made from various herbs, with honey made from bees in the forest, with goat's milk as well as the medicine she had brought with her from the clinic. The multifaceted "cure" appears to work. At her next medical examination, the doctors are astonished. They can hardly believe that this is the same girl they has seen just months earlier. When asked what her grandfather had used to cure her, the little girl answers, "nature". But where nature has extraordinary powers to heal, it can also be capricious...
