Frankfurt in the mid-1950s is the centre of the postwar economic boom in West Germany and Rosemarie Nitribitt, an attractive woman in her early twenties, is determined to be part of it. She works as a hostess in a third-class nightclub but dreams of joining "fine society". One evening Rosemarie meets her ticket for advancement in the person of Hartog, a rich young businessman with social connections. Hartog is charmed by Rosemarie and sets her up in an apartment that he pays for. But if Rosemarie is Hartog's mistress, someone else is already his fiancée. Rosemarie sees that her future with Hartog is limited and at a party given by Hartog's sister, she latches onto French businessman Fribert. Fribert makes her a very tempting proposition. He'll transform her into a perfect lady and in return she's to make secret tape recording of her assignations with the captains of West German business and politics. Rosemarie does her job well but when Fribert decides that the time has come to begin blackmailing her bedmates, Rosemarie realizes that she is nothing but a disposable tool. She rebels. She refuses to hand over the tapes to Fribert and tries to "sell" them to Hartog in return for marriage. But Hartog can't afford to be seen in public with a "prostitute". Rosemarie's social ambitions are on the verge of being crushed...
