In this whimsical comedy loosely based on Shakespeare's "Macbeth", Mac, an amiable, somewhat dithering, aspiring poet, is on a visit to his hometown of Inverness, Scotland. There, the three "witches" (a trio of giggling maiden aunts) prophesy a series of mishaps that will cause Mac to marry Beth, whom his brother expects to wed the following week. Returning to his current home in Inverness, California, Mac has every intention of preventing this upset -- even if he does already have a crush on Beth and their are rumours that the planned nuptials are more business- than love-based (her father owns the sibling-groom's law practice). Among the guests who begin to arrive at Mac's house in the country are Beth's easily-shocked parents and her priggish brother. Things soon begin to go "wrong" exactly as expected. Mac sleeps with his brother's fiancée, an annoyed skunk wreaks havoc on the wedding, and the in-laws inadvertently breakfast on pot brownies. All of which, ironically, bring prospective bride and brother-in-law closer together. Unlike Shakespeare's tragedy, which ends with Macbeth's decapitation, fate has a kinder ending in store for Mac and Beth. |
