Nowhere, Texas. In a trailer home sitting in the middle of a vast empty field, Zak and Louise are drinking beer while Zak coaxes gentle songs of love and sorrow from his beat-up guitar. Zak washes dishes by day and by night he's haunted by the ghost of the Gypsy Cowboy urging him to drop everything and head for the open road. Louise is content to listen to Zak's songs and sings along when she can. Until, one day, she gets a postcard from an old friend in New York. Domestic harmony is shattered. Louise begins to dream of fame and fortune under the skyscrapers and eventually she packs her bags and sets out to fulfil it. Zak tries to hold out but when the Gypsy Cowboy appears driving a black Cadillac with an empty seat beside him, Zak hops in. In the Big Apple, Louise is still dreaming but by day she's making beds in the Chelsea Hotel. When Zak knocks on her door, she is briefly torn between her fantasies of glamour and the man who loves her, but she refuses to let Zak back into her heart. Down and out in the streets of Manhattan, Zak meets Lulu, a hooker motorcycle chick who's hoping to make it in showbusiness. Lulu is enchanted with Zak's innocence and the two embark on a dizzying nocturnal adventure. But Zak's dalliance with Lulu is only an interlude. When morning comes, Zak resolves to try knocking on Louise's door once more.
