Dir.: Olivier Asselin Olivier Asselin received his Ph.D. in the history of art from the University of Paris in 1986 and has taught the subject at the University of Ottawa since 1988. At about the same time he began a parallel career in filmmaking, directing videos and shorts. He made his auspicious feature debut in 1990 with LA LIBERTÉ D'UNE STATUE, which won numerous awards including a Special Mention at the Montreal World Film Festival. In 1992 he was second unit director on Denys Arcand's LOVE AND HUMAN REMAINS and in 1994 he wrote the script for the documentary, "Le Musée imaginaire de Peter Greenaway". This year he directed the television adaptation of Thomas Bernhard's novel, "Les Maîtres anciens". |

At the end of the 19th century, in a sombre city troubled by death, scientists are searching desperately for a way to immortalize the body. One of the scientists, young Jules, is a bit of a dreamer. Despite what his colleagues insist, poor Jules still believes in the existence of the soul. One day in the middle of the city, under the roadway, a buried pyramid is found. And in the pyramid there is a sarcophagus and in the sarcophagus a fully-wrapped mummy. And, believe it or not, the heart of the mummy is still beating. For Jules, there is no doubt about it: the body of this mummy is alive but its soul has departed and it is necessary to retrieve it as quickly as possible so that the body won't die. Jules' colleagues raise their shoulders and roll their eyes. Each goes his own way, respectively dreaming of the immortality of the body or the immortality of the soul... |
