Dir.: Mireille Dansereau Since making her directorial début in 1967 with "Moi un jour", Mireille Dansereau has made nearly a film a year -- shorts, documentaries and fiction, for television and for theatrical release. Her first feature, LA VIE RÊVÉE (1972), was the first fiction feature directed by a woman in Quebec outside the National Film Board of Canada. Inspired by the tragic life and career of Jacqueline du Pré, the English cellist who was stricken by multiple sclerosis, DUET FOR ONE tells the story of Stephanie Abrahms, one of the great violinists of the 20th century who, suddenly, cannot play and learns that she will soon die. In the course of six acts, six sessions at the psychiatrist, she seeks to blunt the finality of her plight. No longer to be able to play, no longer to be the colleague of her world famous composer-husband, no longer to be the virtuoso, the lover, the woman... Dr. George Feldmann undertakes a heroic endeavour -- to help her confront depression, decay, the desire to die, often against her own wishes, and always knowing that the resolution is inexorable. DUET FOR ONE was written while Jacqueline du Pré was still alive. By the time she died, Tom Kempinski's play had been seen almost everywhere she herself had performed. |
