Dir.: Daniel Bergman

Born in Sweden in 1962, Daniel Bergman's interest in film was kindled at a very early age and at twelve he was already helping his father Ingmar Bergman in the filming of THE MAGIC FLUTE. The following year he assisted on FACE TO FACE and began work as a projectionist. He left school after eighth grade, worked as an assistant, gaffer and grip. Besides his father's films, Bergman apprenticed on works by Vilgot Sjöman, Kjell Grede, Andrei Tarkovsky and Dusan Makavejev. He made his directorial debut in 1986 with a short entitled "Perception", followed by a documentary, "Projectionist", a TV series for Sweden's Channel 1, and two children's films based on Astrid Lindgren stories, "Brenda Brave" and "Goodnight Mr. Vagabond". His first feature, SUNDAY'S CHILDREN, based on a script by his father, earned him the prize for best first feature at the 1992 Montreal World Film Festival.

Adapted from a collection of short stories by Reidar Jönsson (best known as the author of MY LIFE AS A DOG), EXPECTATIONS is a chronicle of one year in the lives of some men and women -- their families and relationships, their greed and selfishness, their generosity and compassion -- of contemporary Sweden. The characters come from all corners of the country, from the south to the far north, and the film paints a humorous but bittersweet portrait of a group of individuals whose paths intersect as they work and weave their way toward love.
