A political activist during the '60s, Juan gets involved in anti-Franco agitation and an assassination. He flees to the isolated Mediterranean island of Tabarka to lay low until things die down and it is safe to return to the mainland. Barely two kilometres wide, Tabarka is a sun-baked place with little vegetation and the islanders eke out a meagre living as fishermen or smugglers. The arrival of a stranger is a big event in this closed community. Juan rents a room at the house of Carmen, a beautiful young woman whose husband is hospitalized on the mainland. Juan meets many of the islanders and strikes up a friendship with Tomas, a hermit who lives alone in the driest and most isolated part of the island. Cristobal, a local boat owner, dislikes Juan because Juan had tried to protect an old man whom he wanted to swindle. Cristobal also has eyes for Carmen and is jealous of Juan's budding relationship with her. Despite Carmen's feelings of guilt and depression brought on by her husband's illness, she takes a liking to the stranger in her house and before long they have initiated a passionate affair. News travels quickly on the island and the inhabitants disapprove of this new relationship. Cristobal uses the occasion to alert the police to Juan's presence on the island and they decide to look into his background. Meanwhile, the nurses caring for Carmen's husband request that she come and take him back. Of course, when Carmen's husband moves back in, Juan is forced to move out. Juan finds himself in a precarious position. His affair with Carmen is about to end and the police are closing in. |
