Piero Nava, a fortyish native of Lombardy, prefers the south of Italy, where he now lives and has set up his business. On the morning of September 11, 1990, on his way to a meeting with his Sicilian representative, Nava witnesses the assassination of Judge Rosario Livatino by Mafia hitmen. Nava reports what he's seen to the police. After a long interrogation, Nava gives his deposition and is accompanied home by police officer Sandro Nardelli. Nava, his wife Franca, and his two children will be protected by the police. The next morning, however, two of Nardelli's superiors come by to advise Nava that he'd be better off moving to a safer spot, where no one can find him. Nava takes their advice and moves his family in with Franca's parents in Montecatini. Also on police advice, Nava gets a gun and grows a mustache. Nava travels on back roads with the police always keeping a discreet distance behind him. One day he gets word that some suspects have been apprehended in Germany. Nava is brought to Cologne by the police and he identifies two of the judge's killers. Back home in Italy, Nava goes back into hiding with his in-laws. The trial is still a way off and Nava's life is in danger...
