A young drama student interviews three noted actresses -- an international diva, a television star and a dubbing director. Via their reminiscences the young interviewer discover the joys and miseries of the theatre as well as a metaphor of life. "I am almost tempted to describe ACTRESSES as 'the masterpiece of Catalan cinema'. Period. That may be overstating it, of course, since these categorical pronouncements are always biased. Nevertheless, apart from some shorts or the eternal VIDA EN SOMBRAS by Llobet Gracia, I have a hard time thinking of another Catalan film as well made, as perfect and perfectionist, or simply compelling, as this adaptation of 'E.R.' by Benet i Jornet that the director of THE HOW AND THE WHY has offered us here." -- Alex Gorina (Guía del Ocio) "Ventura Pons has made a film of exquisite design, of remarkable expressive force, where the aesthetics are always in harmony with the film's other elements. An actor's film but also a director's film, a writer's film, a film with a message -- ACTRESSES is a thoroughly mature feature. A large, complex statement about the theatre, but also about life, which as someone has said before, is nothing but a play." -- Ruiz de Villalobos (Imágines de Actualidad) |
