Touring Austria from village to village exhibiting a stuffed whale has been Roberto's life. One day, driving to a small mountain village, Roberto drops dead from a heart attack. The whale is towed to the village square and awaits someone to claim it. The village mayor manages to trace a relative of Roberto's, Sophie Moor, and she is summoned to collect her inheritance. Sophie arrives in town on the day of a wedding, but Maria, the prospective bride, changes her mind at the last minute and leaves Carl waiting at the altar. Carl is crushed. He'd rather die a bachelor than let Maria go. But when he sees Sophie fussing with the whale, curiosity overcomes grief and he goes over to help her. Before they know what hit them, Carl and Sophie are inside the whale making love. It seems that the whale has this mysterious power and any man making love with Sophie inside it is granted fulfilment of a single wish. Carl had been thinking of his bride while with Sophie and lo, when he emerges from the whale, there is Maria waiting for him. But such miraculous powers can also be dangerous. Soon Maria has been turned into a dog and the mayor has a new tennis court on the steep slope of his backyard. Sophie, who had hoped that the men would use the whale powers for benevolent ends, becomes so revolted by their thoughtlessness that she curses the entire village: "Your selfish wishes will destroy you!" And so it happens. Social chaos ensues when the local Jonahs learn that it's just one wish per person, non-reversible. But this is a fairy tale and fairy tales have happy endings...
