In a remote village in northwestern China, a young woman, Lingfeng, falls in loves with Liugeng, an itinerant peddlar. But Lingfeng has already been betrothed to the kindly doctor Li Yongyi by her father before he died. When Liugeng learns about this he is forced to leave the village. Lingfeng marries Li Yongyi reluctantly. Li opens a herbal medicine shop and works hard to make a unique tonic wine. His kindness and his conscientious behaviour toward even ordinary patients touch Lingfeng and she finally falls in love with him. Li dies one day while collecting herbs in the mountains and Lingfeng decides to carry on his business and opens a wine shop. After eight years, Liugeng returns to the village. He is still in love with Lingfeng and helps her financially, but she rejects his amorous advances. Nevertheless, Lingfeng and Liugeng work together as business partners.
