Johnny Vincent teaches English in a Yonkers high school while pursuing his song writing. After his wife leaves him, Johnny attempts to buy love by throwing money at his new obsession, a former high school classmate, Lisa. When Johnny meets Lisa, he is at his wit's end. He feels like a loser. The music he writes and performs doesn't lead him anywhere. His father is dying and, as a teacher, his lack of motivation makes him ineffective. Lisa not only feels for him but is genuinely moved by his music. Johnny will be everything to Lisa: friend, moral supporter, comforter, counsellor and lover. Johnny walks the thin line between love, possession and addiction. Lisa becomes part of him. She is a wanderer: job to job, relationship to relationship. Is she an opportunist, a loser or truly desperate? She wants to be independent but doesn't know quite how to accomplish this. She's a woman-child. Lisa becomes Johnny's friend, lover and muse. The intimacy of their association causes their families to question their relationship. Johnny's brother thinks he found her on the Geraldo show and Lisa's mother thinks Johnny is connected to the mob. Eventually Lisa becomes turned off by Johnny's need to control her with money, gifts, parties and music. Their relationship -- and Johnny's hold on reality -- becomes more and more precarious.
