Transplanted Catalonian Paco is a travelling salesman for a shoe company and Nino, whom he picks up hitchiking on the backroads of Brittany, is a diminutive Russian who came to France a couple of years earlier for a marriage that fell through. Nino, a self-styled "Italian from Russia" (he thinks it'll help his luck with women), quickly repays Paco's kindness by stealing his car, his luggage and his samples. The stranded salesman is befriended by Marinette, a pretty young shopkeeper who falls in love with him but suggests a three-week cooling-off period. Paco, meanwhile, runs into Nino again and the two become fast friends, but not before he pounds the unfortunate Russian into a stay at the hospital. Rather than cool his heels with Marinette, Paco uses the next three weeks to hit the road again with Nino and demonstrate the techniques of attracting women. Along the way Paco finds he's still got a few things to learn. "Warmly funny, lackadaisical road movie... directed with laid-back wit by Manuel Poirier." -- Janet Maslin (New York Times) |
