Fletcher McBracken is a street performer living in San Antonio, Texas. For as long as anyone can remember, each of the men in Fletcher's family has had a dramatic midnight vision about the woman who would be his lifelong love. Then it's been up to each man to go and find her. After trying to induce a vision by drinking large amounts of coffee and making a giant collage of women's faces, Fletcher finally gets his vision: a flash of dark eyes, a striking brunette's face and the word "Formosa". Roz Willoughby is the woman who matches the face in Fletcher's vision, but Fletcher doesn't yet know it. Roz is a former artist who followed her dreams to Los Angeles but found only cynicism and disillusionment. Her friend Elaine has steered her into conning rich men, telling her, "Don't worry, they always deserve it." Roz participates in the stings with reluctance, but the flame of decency that she has retained until now has begun to fade. And that's precisely when Fletcher enters her life. Roz is supposed to meet a rich Texan at the Formosa Café in Hollywood and Fletcher, who's still chasing his vision, sees the name mentioned in a newspaper and decides there might be a connection. No sooner has he entered the bar that he knows he guessed right; Roz is indeed the woman of his vision. But Roz, who mistakes Fletcher for her Texas "mark", has already assumed her predatory mode. She follows him back to San Antonio and finds his friends and family to be oddly charming, but it will take a lot more than Fletcher's "vision" for Roz to fully regain her humanity.
