Dir.: Miklós Jancsó, József Böjte

One of Hungary's best known directors, Miklós Jancsó was born in Vac in 1921. After graduating from the Budapest Academy of Film and Drama in 1950, he began making newsreels and short documentaries. He directed his first feature, THE BELLS HAVE GONE TO ROME, in 1958 and he has since made over two dozen more, including: CANTATA (1963), THE ROUND-UP (1965), RED PSALM (1972), ELECTRA (1974), HUNGARIAN RHAPSODY (1978), THE DAWN (1986) and THE BLUE DANUBE WALTZ (1991).

József Böjte

Born in 1944, József Böjte made his directorial debut in 1985 with SENSEI. Among his other films are: I'M PRETTY GOOD (1986), TAKE ME WITH YOU (1988), WHAT DOES THIS MAN WANT? (1988), BELLS OF TRANSYLVANIA (1991), ANTIGONE (1992), MESSAGE OF STONES: KÁRPÁTALJA (1994) and LUDAS MATYI (1994).

PART ONE ("Two Episodes and a Ritual"): 56 min.

"The House" -- In Tiszavasvári, with the Rostás family: Ferenc Rostás was a celebrated baton juggler. His children formed a troupe and had several tours abroad. Today they are all unemployed.

"The Funeral of Pápa" -- The ritual funeral of a respected gypsy, János Kozák.

"The End of Mourning" -- The ritual of breaking the mourning period in Kalocsa. (After a funeral it is customary not to dance or have any festivals for a year.)



PART TWO ("Two Festivals and a Song"): 45 min. "Parish Feast in Hodász" -- The consecration of the Pascal cake by Greek Catholics; Easter feasts of evangelical Catholics in Hodász.

"Csatka" -- Events of the parish feast in Csatka.

"The Song" -- The title song by Andodrom at the unveiling of the Attila József Monument in Balatonszárszó.



PART THREE ("Two Live Moments"): 49 min.

"Kalocsa Wedding"; "The Rostás Family" -- The horse market in Nyíregyháza.
