Still living in the same Brooklyn neighbourhood where they were born, childhood friends Al Stanco and Nicky Vetrino work for Frank Parente, the local entrepreneur. While ruthless, street-smart Nicky thrives on the brutality of their increasingly vicious assignments, Al, a gifted drummer, is more musician than mobster. Haunted by the senseless shooting of his father 20 years earlier, he is torn between disdain for violence and loyalty to an employer who is grooming him to take over but still demands total obedience. All's life is further thrown off balance when an enigmatic videographer moves upstairs. Known only as Gabriela, she claims to be researching a documentary about the real Brooklyn. As Al's distrust is blunted by his budding romance with Gabriela, it is Parente's turn to be suspicious. Ordered to search her apartment, Nicky unearths video footage which adds up to a powerful expose of Parente's criminal activities. Furious, Al confronts Gabriela, who reveals that she too grew up in the neighbourhood and that the man who was blamed for the murder of Al's father was her own father. And he was innocent. When Parente's attempt to put the muscle on a local bar-owner leads the man's death, Al begins to have serious questions about his boss.
