In the Assam region of India in the 40s, three Brahmin widows belonging to the family of a Satradikhar (head of a Sattra, a religious and cultural centre) of the Damodardev sect, are leading a difficult life. Durga, the younger sister of the Satradikhar, had become a widow some time back. Indranath, her nephew, decided to bring her home as she was languishing at her in-laws. Durga accepts all the hardships of her social status and looks forward to the day that she will be able to go to Kashi to perform the last rites on her dead husband. But misfortune strikes and she loses the expensive jewellery with which she had hoped to pay for the ceremony. Durga's faith in humanity is sorely tested. Gosani, the widow of the Satradikhar's younger brother, tries to remain independent and to manage her land and tenants with the help of a trustworthy servant, Muhidhar. The third widow is Giribala, the young daughter of the family who returns home when her husband dies prematurely. Giribala has her own ideas about widowhood. She believes that widows must have the right to decide where and how to live. When a young Englishman who is doing research on ancient sects comes to visit, he stirs longings in Giribala. But there is family opposition to her independence. Giribala is adamant. If she cannot decide how and where to live, she will decide how and where to die. |
