CHILI, LA MÉMOIRE OBSTINÉE (AL) Dir.: Patricio Guzmán; Phot.: Éric Pittard, Andrea Guzmán; Ed.: Hélène Girard, Julie Bernard, Jules Collette, Mélanie Gauthier; Mus.: Robert M. Lepage; Cast: Vincent Davy; Prod. & Sales: Éric Michel, Yves Jeanneau, Office national du film, 3155, Côte de Liesse, Saint-Laurent, Québec H4N 2N4 (Canada), tél.: (514) 283-9805/06, fax: (514) 496-1895. An entire generation of young Chileans has grown up largely ignorant of the events surrounding September 11, 1973. That was the day when the socialist government of Salvadore Allende, democratically elected, was overthrown in a coup d'état by General Ernesto Pinochet. That day Juan was supposed to get married. Instead he almost died fighting Pinochet's troops. Now, 23 years later, accompanied by the filmmaker, he is returning to Chile for the first time. Patricio Guzmán is also bringing a copy of his own film, THE BATTLE OF CHILE, a documentary of the Allende era that had been shown around the world but had long been banned in Chile. Discreetly, Guzmán arranges for a screening of the film, for old comrades and for young people. The "survivors" relive the revolution while the students discover a history they never knew. |
