El Negro and Mabel used to be in love. Theirs was a normal relationship. But when he forced her to become a prostitute she resisted and he was lead to commit a murder. The crime remains a secret shared between El Negro and Mabel and keeps them together. This doesn't, however, stop El Negro from prostituting Mabel and, for consolation, she confides in "the man who speaks about God", a strange old man who lives by the river. El Negro meets another street girl, Valeria, but instinct and past experience prevent him from forming a new relationship. It's Valeria who makes the first move. She offers to protect him from the crooked cops that control the area. When El Negro brings Valeria back to the apartment where he lives with Mabel, both women are furious. El Negro tries to placate them, tries to keep them both working for him, but the enterprise may be beyond his means.
