Diane Clovier, a wife and mother in her forties, lives in Paris and works for a small publishing house. She likes her job and she loves her lawyer husband and her two young sons dearly. Life has been good to her. Then one day she meets twenty-something Emilio, a handsome, charming young hydrologist who works for an aid agency, and her world collapses. Throwing all caution to the wind, she begins an ardent, all-consuming affair with Emilio. Diane's passion knows no bounds; she risks her job and her marriage for it. She takes Emilio with her on a trip when she is supposed to be on business and her time spent with him takes priority even over appointments with her boss and clients. Diane's husband Philippe begins to suspect her infidelity and his suspicions are confirmed by an overheard phone conversation. He says nothing, however, hoping that time will cure her amorous delirium. And while his wife is off conducting her adulterous affair, he's busy defending a woman who killed her philandering husband with a fork. "A bold and quite beautiful BRIEF ENCOUNTER for the '90s, the film explores well-charted territory but with a freshness and passion that's invigorating." -- David Stratton (Variety) |
