Jacques Laniel is a young policeman with a good life and career ahead of him when his world collapses. His partner, Thomas Colin, is shot and killed right before his eyes. Shunned by his colleagues, who feel that he didn't do enough to protect Thomas, and abandoned by his wife, who can't take living under such constant tension, Laniel has nothing to lose. He makes it his personal crusade to find Thomas' killers. Chance brings him to the site of another sordid murder, that of a university professor Zachary Osborne, whose bound body was left lying on the hood of his car. Retained by the man's widow, Laniel discovers that not only was Osborne a good writer but he was also a pretty good real estate speculator as well. Laniel decides to steer his investigation to the dozen inhabitants of the Conciergerie, a large mansion that Osborne acquired in order to convert it into a half-way house. Slowly Laniel delves deeper into the world of these worrisome people, all of whom have something to hide.
