A small town in Spain in the mid-Sixties. Nine-year-old Javi learns from his brother that a crime was committed in the old house on the edge of town -- a crime of passion. His brother Juan also tells him that the place is still haunted by the ghosts of the victims. The house has been deserted since the terrible event occurred, but one can still hear voices coming from the cellar. Javi convinces his friend Carlos to accompany him on an expedition to the house. For Javi this will be a first adventure into the unknown. Javi and his brother spend the Easter holidays with their aunts in a mountain village. There, in a locked room that reminds him of the haunted house, Javi also encounters a ghost. This was the room where his father's dead body was found years ago. Juan tells Javi that here, too, one can hear the voice of the deceased crying out, like all ghosts, to unburden himself of his secrets. Javi, however, finds the secrets of the living just as compelling. During the course of his vacation, the mysteries of the adult world begin to reveal themselves to him. He begins to acquire vague notions of such things as lies and passion, love and death. His imagination begins to expand.
