Dir.: Kei Kumai

Born in Nagano, Japan in 1930, Kei Kumai fell in love with the cinema at an early age when he discovered French and Italian films. He studied sociology at Shinshu University but, upon graduating, he quickly joined the Nikkatsu Film Company in 1954 as an apprentice. He worked as assistant director for several years (for, among others, Yutaka Abe, Tomotaka Tasaka and Seiji Hisamatsu) before making his directorial debut in 1964 with TEIJIN CASE, for which he also wrote the screenplay. In 1969 he became an independent director and established his international reputation with SANDAKAN NUMBER 8 (1974), which was nominated for an Academy Award. His films include: THE SEA AND THE POISON (1986, winner of the Silver Bear at the Berlin Festival) THE DEATH OF A TEA MASTER (1989), MOUNT ASO'S PASSION (1990, shown at the Montreal World Film Festival), LUMINOUS MOSS (1992) and DEEP RIVER (1995, winner of the Oecumenical Prize at the Montreal World Film Festival).

Sweet Mitsu has a crush on Yoshioka, a young salesman from Okinawa who offers to bring her back to Tokyo. En route, Yoshioka invites her to dinner, takes her out to see a movie and manages to bring her to a bar for a drink. With the help of some lies he even gets her to go with him into a hotel. But Yoshioka isn't ready to accept her love. As a child he was abandoned by his mother and now he doesn't really trust women. He sneaks away without leaving any address. A month later they meet again. Yoshioka is now working in a real estate brokerage and Mitsu is a hostess in a bar in Tokyo's Ginza district. Mitsu harbours no ill will towards Yoshioka. She is just happy to have found him again. Yoshioka eventually gets over his apprehensions and decides to live with Mitsu. One day he finds a red spot on Mitsu's arm. Mitsu is examined and sent to a sanatorium. Isolated from the rest of the world, Mitsu slowly begins to know the other patients and to love them. She becomes a source of kindness and compassion, and through the strength of her love she transforms this place of suffering and hopelessness and provides a beacon of light for everyone around her.
