Dir.: George Hickenlooper After graduating from Yale University in film studies, George Hickenlooper embarked on a career as a screenwriter and documentary filmmaker. He directed HEARTS OF DARKNESS: A FILMMAKER'S APOCALYPSE (1991), which was shown at Cannes and won an Emmy after being shown on the Showtime television network. Among Hickenlooper's other credits are the features GREY NIGHT (1994), THE LOW LIFE (1995) and PERSONS UNKNOWN (1996), a short version of Billy Bob Thornton's SLING BLADE, and various episodes of such TV series as "Crosstown Traffic" and "Vital Signs". He directed the documentaries PICTURE THIS: THE TIMES OF PETER BOGDANOVICH and ART, ACTING AND THE SUICIDE CHAIR (about actor-director Dennis Hopper). Hickenlooper also authored a collection of interviews with critics and directors, "Reel Conversations". |

Fallen cheerleader and beauty queen Dorothy Sternen is trapped in her small town world of Cuba, Missouri and in a nowhere relationship with her overbearing and sometimes violent boyfriend Ezra Good. He was an all-star athlete in high school but now Ezra works as a tow-truck driver and is bitter about a fate that hasn't been kind to him. His relationship with Dorothy has lasted ten years mainly for lack of alternatives. This changes radically when a handsome stranger from Dorothy's past suddenly shows up in town.
