Ludovic thinks he's a girl. What's normal for him may not appear too normal to others. There are things you do and things you don't do, even if you are just a small boy of seven. When his parents, Pierre and Hanna, celebrate their arrival in a manicured Paris suburb with a housewarming party, Ludovic shows up dressed as a fairy princess. The couple have two other sons and a teenage daughter and they think that Ludovic, with his attraction to dolls, is just going through a phase. But Ludovic announces that he'll marry Jerome, the little boy next door, when he grows up. Jerome, whose father is Pierre's boss, finds nothing wrong with the plan and even participates in a mock wedding ceremony, but his horrified parents warn him that he'll go straight to hell if he continues to play with Ludovic. The charming community, so welcoming on the surface, turns out to be inhabited by people with an inflexible notion of what's normal, and that doesn't include poor little Ludovic. "MA VIE EN ROSE explores a young boy's gender confusion and its repercussions on his family with a sure hand and a bright eye." -- Lisa Nesselson (Variety) |
