Mazal Saiel, an Israeli housekeeper, is faced with the seemingly impossible task of tracing her husband, Danny Saiel, who left the country in 1976 and disappeared under politically sensitive circumstances. Mazal is an orthodox Jew and until the Rabbinic court rules that her husband is "dead", she cannot remarry under religious law. The trouble is that no one knows what happened to Danny. Or won't tell. Danny was a radical activist in the Israeli "Black Panthers", and the secret service arrested him for smuggling weapons to Arab terrorists. Jailed briefly, he left the country and in 1976 he summoned Mazal to live with him abroad, in Spain, in France and finally in Iraq. She refused and returned to Israel. Then Danny disappeared. Danny had contacts in Iraq and the Israeli intelligence were trailing him in Europe. Was he working for the Iraqis or was he an Israeli double agent? There is some evidence to support the second theory. If he was a danger to the state, why was he allowed to leave the country in the first place? And why didn't the Mossad capture him abroad? Regardless, until Danny's death is confirmed -- and no one in Israeli defense establishment will do so -- Mazal cannot acquire a religious divorce.
