Divided into three parts, the film is set in a small village called El Paraíso. In the first part, a man is poisoned and dies a long agonizing death. No one in the town lifts a finger to help him. The victim is The Turk, the local pawnbroker, and while not everyone is directly responsible for his death, most people in town aren't sorry to see him gone. They owed him money and their pawned belongings hide important secrets about their lives. In the second part, the villagers prepare to recover their pawned objects and get on with their lives. But the ghost of The Turk comes back to haunt them. Begonia, a young woman who was The Turk's girlfriend, steals his corpse, cleans it and installs it in the pawnshop's garret. But the next morning the body is missing and El Paraíso is gripped by fear. The villagers are afraid that The Turk will return to revenge his death and to recover the money that they owe him. Nicanor, the village head who isn't shy to profit from his position, decrees that all debts are forgiven and, in the absence of the Turk's corpse, he will get another. In the third part, the villagers see the flooding the town is suffering as retribution for their sins. They devise a process of repentance... |
