Rita Page, a former Las Vegas showgirl, and her untalented daughter Franchesca, have come to Broadway searching for fame and fortune. To everyone's surprise, especially after a disastrous audition, Franchesca lands the understudy role in a half-baked disco revue called "The Lady Does It All". As sinister incidents begin plaguing the production, Franchesca and her mother discover that the whole thing is a scam masterminded by Veronica, a sadistic producer intent on delivering a flop and keeping all the investors' money. Mother and daughter, with best friend Melba in tow, work to thwart Veronica's plans and make Franchesca a star. Desperate to turn things around, they join forces with an out-of-work prima donna, Envisiona de la Paz, who is looking toward "Lady" as her comeback, but with a raggedy dance troupe and a thoroughly mis-managed production, the show is sinking faster than the Titanic. The futility of their attempt becomes apparent on opening night when Franchesca, aware of her performing deficiencies, refuses to go on stage. As mother and daughter are forced to confront a moment of truth in their relationship and dreams, Rita emerges as the one to save the day. |
