1991, an island in the Adriatic off the coast of Croatia. The Croatian parliament has voted to secede from the Yugoslav federation and form an independent republic. Bla Gajski, father of a young Croatian soldier, has come to the island to retrieve his son, but the Yugoslav Army unit stationed on the island only recognizes the authority of army headquarters in Belgrade. The unit's commanding officer, Major Aleksa, refuses to remove his men from the island or discharge the Croatian soldiers. His paranoia knows no bounds. He blows up the ammunition dump and threatens to do the same for the entire island if anyone makes a move against the barracks. Gajski gets no help in his quest. The island is in an extreme state of uncertainty and everyone on it is looking out for number one. It is also a time for people to become what they've always dreamed of being. The local plumber styles himself a leader, the musclebound hulk an intellectual, the retired officer an artist, the art historian a spy, the second-rate musician a virtuoso, the local idiot a hero. Gajski realizes that he has to be crazier than the madmen if he is ever to help his son...
